A thought for the New Year

CoverBlog13

As we come to the close of this year I’ve reflected on the things I’ve been able to accomplish and the things I’ve learned. Many of the things that I’ve been able to do came as a result of setting a goal. I’ve set many goals throughout my life, but I don’t always reach them. I’m sure it’s happened to all of us. However, I thought back to see what made the difference between the goals I achieved and the ones I didn’t. As I did so, I realized 3 common key principles I had applied each time I reached a goal.

The why

Behind each goal is always a “why”; the reason we want to achieve the goal. We work out to be healthier or look better. We study so we can learn or get a degree, etc. The “why” behind the goal is the motivating factor; what drives us to accomplish the goal. Whatever the “why” might be, I invite you to write it down next to your goal and put it somewhere you’ll see often. This leads me to principle two- remember.

Remember

As humans it’s easy to forget. I’m sure all of us have forgotten about a goal or dream we’ve had. However, it’s more likely that we didn’t forget the goal, but rather have forgotten the reason behind the goal. For this reason I say it’s important to write down your goal and the “why” behind it. As said earlier, keep it someplace you’ll see often.

Positivity and believing

Generally speaking, when we set a goal, it’s to accomplish something we’ve never achieved before. Therefore it requires us to do things we’ve never done before. This can be difficult and even scary sometimes. At times it may seem like we’ll never reach our goals. When these moments happen, not only do we need to remember the “why”, but we also need to remain positive. We’ve written blogs before about the effects of positive thinking. I need not go into the details to say that when we’re positive, it’s easier to believe we can accomplish our goals. It makes it easier to put in the needed effort and work. So stay positive.

A quote I love states “…if we don’t set goals in our life and learn how to master the techniques of living to reach our goals, we can reach a ripe old age and look back on our life only to see that we reached but a small part of our full potential.” I hope these principles will help you in journey of improvement. I am confident that if we put in the needed effort and remember why we’re pursuing our goals, we will be able to reach them.
